Ala Moana Center isn't just a mall, it's an experience. It's the largest open-air shopping center in the world, and it totally embraces that laid-back Hawaiian vibe while offering just about everything you could want, from luxury stores to surf shops to casual local boutiques. Whether you're looking to splurge, window shop, or grab some tasty food, this place is super convenient, especially if you're staying in or near Waikiki. You'll find over 350 stores and dozens of restaurants here, plus regular live performances at the central stage, everything from hula to local music. It's also a great escape if you need a break from the beach but still want something lively to do. And speaking of the beach, Ala Moana Beach Park is literally across the street, so it's easy to combine both into a relaxed half-day outing. What makes it especially nice is that it caters to everyone. You'll see locals grabbing a quick bite, tourists picking up souvenirs, and even keiki (kids) playing near the stage while their parents shop.

Tips for Visiting

  • Free Hula Shows: Check out the Center Stage area for free live performances, they often have hula dancing and local musicians.

  • Food Court Gems: At the Makai Market Food Court, there are solid local favorites like Lahaina Chicken Company or L&L Hawaiian BBQ, if you want a plate lunch.

  • Parking is Free: Yep, free parking, rare for Honolulu! But it can get busy, especially on weekends, so go earlier if you can.

  • Beach Combo: It's right across from Ala Moana Beach Park, so it's perfect for grabbing snacks or dinner after a swim or sunset session.

  • Local Shops: It's not all high-end brands, check out stores like Local Motion or Island Slipper for some Hawaii vibes.
