If you've ever wanted to step inside a real volcano, Algar do Carvao on Terceira Island in the Azores is your chance. This isn't your typical lava cave, it's a volcanic chimney, where you can actually walk down into the Earth's core (well, almost). Expect towering rock walls covered in moss, surreal volcanic formations, and even a crystal-clear underground lake at the bottom. It's like a scene straight out of a fantasy movie! What Makes It Special? You're Inside a Dormant Volcano: Unlike other caves, this one wasn't formed by flowing lava but by a volcanic eruption over 3,000 years ago. The lava drained away, leaving behind this massive underground chamber. The Underground Lake: At the very bottom, there's a rain-fed lake, and depending on recent rainfall, its depth changes. The reflection of light on the water makes it even more magical. Lush Green Walls: Over time, nature has taken over, covering the rocky interior with vibrant moss and ferns, giving the whole place an almost otherworldly vibe.

Tips for Visiting

  • Wear Good Shoes: The stairs leading down are steep and can be slippery, so bring sturdy, non-slip shoes. Flip-flops? Big mistake.

  • It:s Cool Down There: Even on a warm day, the temperature inside stays around 15C (59F). Bring a light jacket, or be prepared for goosebumps!

  • Check the Opening Times: Algar do Carvao isn't open every day, and right now, it's temporarily closed for renovations (reopening expected in March or April 2025). Always check ahead!

  • Don't Skip the Nearby Lava Caves: If you're into cool geological wonders, add Gruta do Natal to your itinerary. It's a lava tube with a very different feel but just as interesting.
