If you’re looking for one of the most dramatic coastal landscapes on Pico Island, Cachorro is the place to go. This tiny village, located on the north coast of the island near Madalena, is famous for its wild volcanic rock formations, including the well-known "Arcos do Cachorro" (Dog Arches), a lava formation that some say looks like a dog’s head howling at the sky. Unlike the lush greenery you’ll find in other parts of the Azores, Cachorro is all about raw, volcanic beauty—dark black lava cliffs, waves crashing against the rocks, and tunnels carved out by the power of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a perfect spot for wandering, taking photos, and just soaking in the island’s unique geology. What Makes Cachorro Special? Incredible Lava Rock Formations: The coastline here is shaped by ancient lava flows, creating arches, tunnels, and rugged cliffs that contrast beautifully with the deep blue Atlantic. Waves & Wild Nature: The ocean can be incredibly powerful here, making for some breathtaking views as waves smash against the lava rocks.    Wine Country Vibes: Cachorro is right in the heart of Pico’s famous vineyard region, so you’ll see traditional stone-walled vineyards nearby—part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A Great Photo Spot: The "Dog Arches" rock formation is a must-see, but the entire coastline is photogenic, especially at sunset.

Tips for Visiting

  • Wear Sturdy Shoes: The volcanic rocks can be sharp and uneven, so avoid flip-flops and go for sneakers or hiking shoes.

  • Be Careful Near the Edge: The waves can be strong, and the rocks can be slippery, so stay back from the edge, especially on windy days.

  • Perfect for a Quick Stop: Cochorro is a small area, so you don't need a lot of time here, 30 minutes to an hour is plenty to soak in the views.

  • Pair It with Biscoitos Natural Pools: Since Cochorro is on the north side of Pico, it's a great stop before or after a swim at the Biscoitos Natural Pools.
