Gruta das Torres

If you're up for a real underground adventure, Gruta das Torres is a must-see. This is the longest lava tube in the Azores, stretching over 5 kilometers, though only a section is open to visitors. Unlike other caves that have been modernized with lights and walkways, Gruta das Torres keeps things raw and natural, you'll be wearing a helmet with a headlamp and walking through the actual lava-formed terrain, just like early explorers. Why Visit Gruta das Torres? A True Lava Cave Experience: Unlike caves with artificial lighting and smooth paths, this one lets you explore it in its natural state, making it feel like a true discovery. Incredible Lava Formations: Inside, you'll see lava stalactites, lava balls, and rope lava, patterns formed by molten rock thousands of years ago. Perfect for Geology Lovers & Adventurers: If you're fascinated by volcanoes and the forces that shape our planet, this is one of the best places in the Azores to see it up close.
Tips for Visiting
Wear Good Shoes: The cave floor is uneven and rocky, so hiking boots or sturdy sneakers are a must.
Be Ready for Darkness: You'll be given a helmet with a headlamp, but the cave is completely dark inside, no artificial lights!
Go with a Guide: You can't explore alone, but the guided tours (usually around 1 hour) are informative and engaging.
Not for Claustrophobic Travelers: The cave is wide and spacious in some areas, but parts of the path are low and require crouching. If you don't like tight spaces, this might not be for you.
Book in Advance: Tours are limited in size, so it's best to reserve your spot ahead of time, especially in summer.
