Honolulu Zoo
The Honolulu Zoo is a great option if you're traveling with kids or just want a chill, nature-filled afternoon that doesn't involve sand or surf. Located right at the edge of Waikiki in Queen Kapiolani Park, it's super accessible and walkable, perfect if you're staying in the area and want to mix things up a bit. It's not the biggest zoo in the world, but it's got a surprisingly diverse collection of animals, elephants, giraffes, lions, zebras, tropical birds, and more, all set within a lush, tropical landscape. What makes it unique is its setting: you're surrounded by palm trees, views of Diamond Head, and the occasional ocean breeze as you stroll through. There's also a strong focus on conservation and native Hawaiian species, which gives it a local touch you won't find at most mainland zoos. It's peaceful, shaded in most areas, and perfect for a half-day outing, especially if you're looking for something low-key to do in Waikiki that still feels connected to nature.
Tips for Visiting
Come Early for Cooler Weather: The animals are more active in the morning, and it's less crowded and cooler then, especially important on hot days.
Bring Water and Sunscreen: Even though it's shaded in many spots, it's still Hawaii, you'll want to stay hydrated and protected from the sun.
Great for Kids: There's a large playground and open grassy areas where kids can run around and burn off energy.
Plan 1.5 to 2 Hours: That's usually enough time to see everything without rushing.
Pack Snacks or Grab Lunch Nearby: There are a few concessions inside, but you're also right near plenty of restaurants and cafes just outside the zoo gates.
Combo with Waikiki or Kapi'olani Park: You can easily pair it with a beach morning or a walk through the park, everything's super close.
Parking: There's a paid lot right outside the zoo entrance (cash or card), but it fills up quickly on weekends, so early is best.
