This is one of those places that feels like a secret slice of paradise. Tucked away in Kaneohe on the windward side of Oahu, it's one of the most peaceful, scenic spots on the island, and the best part? It's completely free. The name Ho'omaluhia means "to make a place of peace", and that's exactly what it is. The moment you drive in, you're surrounded by towering tropical trees, lush green mountains, and a sense of calm that's hard to describe. It covers over 400 acres and features plants from tropical regions all over the world, not just Hawaii, but also Africa, the Philippines, Polynesia, and more. There's even a lake you can walk around, picnic near, or just sit by and soak in the serenity. It's a great place to escape the crowds, reconnect with nature, and just breathe. Whether you're into photography, plants, peaceful walks, or just want a quiet break from beach life, this one's a gem.

Tips for Visiting

  • Admission is Free: Yep, totally free, and open daily from 9 AM to 4 PM (closed Christmas and New Year's Day).

  • The Drive-In Photo Spot: You'll probably recognize the palm-lined road near the entrance, it's Insta-famous. They don't allow stopping on the road anymore, but you can park and walk back for the shot.

  • Bring a Picnic: There are shaded picnic areas by the lake, perfect for a peaceful lunch with unreal views of the Ko'olau Mountains.

  • No Swimming or Drones: The lake is beautiful, but it's not for swimming or boating. Also, drone use is prohibited unless you have a permit.

  • Great for Families or Solo Time: Whether you're bringing the kids or going solo with a camera and a book, it's a great spot to relax and explore at your own pace.

  • Weather Can Shift Fast: Since it's on the windward side, bring a light rain jacket just in case. The clouds can roll in quickly, but honestly, it just adds to the misty jungle vibes.

  • Pair with Nearby Stops: It's close to Byodo-In Temple, Kualoa Regional Park, and Lanikai Beach, perfect for making a full North/East Shore adventure day.
