Melbourne's Historic Gem. Nestled in Melbourne's Domain precinct, La Trobe's Cottage offers a window into the early colonial life of Victoria's first Lieutenant-Governor, Charles Joseph La Trobe. Constructed in 1839, this prefabricated dwelling was shipped from England and assembled on La Trobe's Jolimont estate. Today, the cottage stands as a testament to Melbourne's formative years, meticulously restored and furnished to reflect the period. What to Expect Authentic Interiors: The cottage showcases original and period-appropriate furnishings, providing insight into the domestic life of the La Trobe family. Guided Tours: Knowledgeable volunteers lead visitors through the cottage, sharing stories of its history and the La Trobe family's contributions to Melbourne's development. Heritage Garden: The surrounding garden has been recreated using plants available in the 1840s and 1850s, offering a tranquil setting that complements the historic dwelling.
