Lava Tube
The Lava Tube at Halona (also known as the Halona Cove Lava Tube) is one of those tucked-away gems that most people drive right past, but if you're up for a little adventure, it's a super cool spot to explore. Located near Halona Blowhole and Eternity Beach on Oahu's southeastern shore, the lava tube is a short, somewhat hidden tunnel carved by ancient volcanic flows that leads from the beach toward the rocky coastline. It's not a huge or long cave, but it has this raw, otherworldly feel to it, a reminder of how this island was literally built by fire and time. When the tide is right and the lighting's good, you can walk inside the tube and even see the ocean glowing at the far end. Just watch your step, it's dark, slippery, and can get tight in places. This isn't an official attraction with signage or safety rails, so it's more of a, go at your own risk, kind of experience, but for adventurers and photographers, it's a fun little detour.
Tips for Visiting
Pair it with a Visit to Halona Blowhole: It's located just up the road from the lookout on the left. You'll need to scramble down a rocky path to get there.
Respect the Area: This spot isn't managed or cleaned, so leave no trace, take only photos, and be mindful of your impact.
Incredible Photos: The contrast of black lava rock, turquoise ocean, and the tunnel's framing makes for amazing shots, especially when the light hits just right.
