If you're keen on exploring the rich viticultural heritage of Pico Island, the Museu do Vinho (Wine Museum) in Madalena is a must-visit. Housed in a historic 17th-century Carmelite convent, this museum offers a deep dive into the island's centuries-old winemaking traditions. Why Visit the Museu do Vinho? Historical Significance: The museum is set within the former Convent of the Carmelites, a symbol of the golden era of Pico's Verdelho wine production. Walking through its halls, you'll encounter traditional wine presses, alembics, and other artifacts that chronicle the evolution of winemaking on the island. Museu do Pico Unique Landscape: Surrounding the museum are the iconic basaltic stone walls and vineyards that have earned the Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture a UNESCO World Heritage designation. These "currais" (small rectangular plots) showcase the ingenious methods developed to cultivate vines in volcanic soil. Wikipedia Dragon Tree Forest: Within the museum grounds lies a grove of ancient dragon trees (Dracaena draco), some estimated to be between 500 and 1,000 years old. This rare collection adds a mystical touch to the visit.
