If you're into history, epic sea views, and ancient fortresses, Sao Joao Baptista Fort in Angra do Heroismo is a must-visit. This massive 16th-century fortress, built by the Spanish during their rule of Portugal, sits right on the coast, offering stunning views of the Atlantic and Terceira's rugged coastline. Walking through its thick stone walls, tunnels, and old cannons, you can almost feel the echoes of the battles and pirate invasions that once took place here. Why Visit This Fort? It's the Biggest Fortress in the Azores: Covering an entire peninsula, this place is huge and one of the best-preserved military forts in Portugal. Incredible Views: From the top, you get panoramic views of Angra do Heroismo, Monte Brasil, and the Atlantic, perfect for photos! Rich History: The fort played a key role in protecting the Azores from pirates and was even used as a prison during different periods. It's Still in Use Today: Part of the fort is actually an active military base, which makes it feel even more authentic.
Tips for Visiting
Wear Good Walking Shoes: The fort is massive with uneven stone paths, so comfortable shoes are a must.
Ask About Guided Tours: Since it's still partially in use, access can be limited, but guided tours can take you to hidden areas you wouldn't see otherwise.
Check the Opening Hours: The entrance isn't always open to the public, so it's a good idea to confirm visiting times before going.
Go at Sunset: If you can, visit in the late afternoon, the golden light over the fortress and ocean is absolutely stunning.
