Spitting Cave
Spitting Cave is one of those jaw-dropping, wild coastal spots on Oahu that feels like nature showing off. Tucked away in a quiet residential area in Portlock (near Hawaii Kai), this hidden gem features a steep, lava rock cliff where powerful waves crash into a sea cave below, and when the water pressure builds up just right, it spits the water back out with incredible force, creating a dramatic burst that sprays high into the air. It's not a touristy place, which makes it even better. No signs, no crowds, just raw nature, deep blue water, and epic cliffside views. The lookout spot sits high above the action, so it's not for swimming or cliff jumping (seriously, the currents here are extremely dangerous), but it's an amazing place to just sit, watch the ocean's power, and maybe even spot dolphins or whales offshore if you're lucky. Sunsets here? Unreal. The light hits the cliffs and water in such a surreal way, it's peaceful, powerful, and totally unforgettable.
Tips for Visiting
Use Google Maps to Find It: There's no signage, just enter Spitting Cave of Portlock in your GPS and follow it to the end of Lumahai Street. You'll see a narrow path between two houses leading down.
Wear Good Shoes: The trail down is short but can be steep and slippery. Avoid flip-flops, go for sneakers or hiking sandals.
Don't Swim or Cliff Jump: The ocean here is incredibly dangerous, with strong surges and hidden currents. It's a place to observe, not enter. People do jump anyway, but recently in February 2025, a tourist jumped and drown.
Time It with the Waves: The spitting effect is best on rougher surf days or during rising tides so check the ocean forecast before you go.
Great for Photos & Sunsets: Bring your camera, the combination of crashing waves, deep cliffs, and golden light makes for stunning shots.
Respect the Neighborhood: This is a quiet, upscale residential area. Keep noise down, park legally, and be mindful of residents.
No Facilities: There are no restrooms, water fountains, or trash cans. Pack out whatever you bring in.
