Turkey Trot
The Turkey Trot in Honolulu is a fun, festive, and light-hearted run that's become a local Thanksgiving Day tradition. It usually takes place on Thanksgiving morning and brings out everyone, from serious runners to families in turkey hats, costumes, and even pajama-clad walkers looking to earn their plate of stuffing later in the day. What makes this event stand out is that it's not your typical timed race, at least in the classic sense. It's usually a 5k t0 10k run (though distances may vary by year), but here's the twist: you predict your finish time before you start, and you're not allowed to wear a watch or use your phone to track yourself. The person who finishes closest to their predicted time wins! It's a cool way to level the playing field and focus on pacing rather than speed. It usually starts and ends in Kapi'olani Park, and the route takes you through scenic parts of Honolulu, often including stretches near Diamond Head or Waikiki. Plus, it benefits a good cause, proceeds often go toward local charities or running programs.
Tips for Attending
Sign Up Early: It's a popular event and fills up quickly. Registration usually opens well in advance of Thanksgiving.
Leave the Watch at Home: It's all about pacing yourself, so train a little beforehand if you want to get close to your predicted time.
Costumes Are Encouraged: From turkey tutus to pumpkin pie hats, the more festive, the better. It's a super casual and fun vibe.
Great Pre-Turkey Burn: Whether you run or walk, it's a perfect way to kick off Thanksgiving and feel less guilty about that second (or third) helping later on.
Bring the Family: Kids, strollers, and even dogs (on leashes) are welcome, depending on the rules that year. It's very family-friendly.
Pick Up Your Packet Early: Check the pickup location ahead of time, it's usually available the day before the event at a local running store or sponsor.
Stick Around After: There's usually some post-run fun at the park, music, giveaways, and plenty of good vibes.
