Wai Kai
This is one of the coolest new lifestyle destinations on Oahu, and it's seriously changing the game on the west side. Located in Ewa Beach, just a short drive from Kapolei, Wai Kai blends water sports, dining, entertainment, and local culture into one modern, ocean-inspired hub. It's like a sleek beachfront village with something for everyone, locals, visitors, foodies, surfers, families, all of it. The biggest highlight? The Wai Kai Wave, the first deep-water standing wave in Hawaii, and one of the largest in the world. Whether you're a beginner or experienced rider, you can book a session and surf a perfectly controlled wave right next to a lagoon. Don't feel like surfing? No worries, grab a seat at The LookOut restaurant and enjoy front-row views of people riding the wave while you sip a cocktail. Beyond the wave, there's a beautiful lagoonside promenade, shops, rental options for SUPs, kayaks, and pedal boats, and open space to just relax and hang out. It's an awesome place to spend a few hours or even an entire day, and it's especially great for families or couples looking to do something different from the usual beach day.
Tips for Visiting
Book Wave Sessions Early: The Wai Kai Wave is super popular and has limited slots each day. Book online ahead of time, especially on weekends.
No Surfing Experience Needed: Total beginners are welcome! They provide gear and instructors, and you'll start at a lower wave setting.
Eat at The LookOut: Great food, solid drinks, and a killer view of the wave. Try to grab an outdoor table during sunset.
Try the Lagoon Rentals: You can paddleboard, kayak, or pedal around the lagoon, it's a fun, mellow activity and perfect for all ages.
Check the Event Schedule: Wai Kai hosts outdoor concerts, cultural events, fitness classes, and movie nights, lots of local flavor.
Free Parking (for Now): There's a big lot, and parking has been free, but always check signage in case that changes.
Perfect Combo Day with Wet-n-Wild or White Plains Beach: If you're exploring the west side, Wai Kai fits right in as a relaxing afternoon or evening spot.
