Ka'anapali Beach
Ka'anapali Beach is Maui's iconic resort beach, and for good reason, it has soft golden sand, crystal-clear water, great snorkeling, and the full lineup of shops, restaurants, and beachfront hotels. Located on the west shore just north of Lahaina, it's one of the island's most popular spots for sunbathing, swimming, sunset strolls, and even cliff diving at the famous Black Rock. Whether you're looking to relax or stay active, Ka'anapali gives you a little bit of everything. Why Visit Ka?anapali Beach? Perfect Swimming & Snorkeling: The water is usually calm and clear, especially around Black Rock, where you can snorkel with sea turtles and colorful fish. Watch (or Try!) Cliff Jumping at Black Rock: Local tradition lives on at Pu'u Keka'a (Black Rock) where people jump from the lava cliffs into the ocean, especially fun to watch at sunset. Resort Convenience Without Losing Beauty: Even though it's lined with resorts, the beach itself is public and gorgeous, with plenty of space for everyone. Beach Walk Vibes: There's a long, paved beach path that connects the resorts, shops, and restaurants, perfect for a casual walk or morning jog with a view. Right Next to Whalers Village: This open-air shopping center has restaurants, boutique stores, and beach gear, super handy if you forgot your sunscreen or want a bite after swimming. Unreal Sunsets: The west-facing view gives you some of the best sunsets on the island, especially with Moloka'i and Lana'i in the distance.
Tips for Visiting
Best Time to Go? Early morning for fewer crowds, or sunset hour for the golden glow and cliff-diving show.
Where to Park: Try Whalers Village (they validate with a purchase), or look for limited public beach access parking, just go early, it fills up fast.
Bring Snorkel Gear: Black Rock is one of the best easy-access snorkel spots on Maui, and the reef is right off the shore.
Watch for Surf Conditions: The beach is generally calm, but check daily ocean conditions, especially in winter.
Lifeguards: Nope, no lifeguards on Ka'anapali Beach, so be cautious if you're not a strong swimmer.
Combine with a Sunset Dinner: Book a table at a beachfront restaurant or do a sunset picnic right on the sand.
Thoughts from my Visit
This stretch of white sand is perfect if you're interested in suntanning, swimming, and snorkeling. Most of Kaanapali Beach lies in front of the resort hotels of West Maui.
