Kahanamoku Beach

If you want to experience Waikiki Beach without the crazy crowds, Duke Kahanamoku Beach is the perfect spot. Named after Duke Kahanamoku, Hawaii’s legendary surfer and Olympic swimmer, this beach sits at the west end of Waikiki, right in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village. With calm, shallow waters, a beautiful lagoon, and stunning views of Diamond Head, it's a great place to relax, swim, or even try paddleboarding. Why Visit Duke Kahanamoku Beach: Less Crowded than Waikiki Beach: Since it’s at the far end of Waikiki, it’s quieter and more spacious than the central sections.

Perfect for Swimming: The calm, shallow waters make this a great spot for families, beginner swimmers, and paddleboarders. Great for Snorkeling Near the Breakwater: While it’s not a top snorkeling beach, you might see small fish near the rock barriers. Awesome Sunset Spot: This is one of the best places in Waikiki to watch the sunset. Easy Access to the Hilton Lagoon: Right next to the beach, the Hilton Lagoon is a great place to try stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking.

Tips for Visiting

  • Best Time to Go: Early morning for peace, late afternoon for sunset.

  • Swimming Conditions: Super calm, great for kids & beginners.

  • Parking: Paid parking at Hilton Hawaiian Village or street parking near Ala Moana.

  • Facilities: Restrooms, showers, and rentals are available.

  • Bring a Float or Paddleboard: The calm water is perfect for floating or paddling.

Thoughts from my Visit

I personally frequent this beach a lot, as it doesn't get quite so packed as Waikiki Beach just down the road a little bit. There is also a small man-made lagoon behind the beach where kids (and adults) can play without the waves to worry about. Several sections in the beginning, do have a lot of rocks when you first enter. So if you are wanting to go in and out of the water, bring water shoes to protect your feet, or go more down the beach near the bend where it is usually a lot sandier to enter. A descent amount of parking, that cycles through quite frequently with beach-goers and surfers coming and going. It's right next to one of the Marinas and there is McDonalds across the street and a small hole-in-the-wall pub on the corner, that serves pizza as well as other foods and Chart House Restaurant/Bar on the second floor above..
