Kailua Beach
If you’re looking for soft white sand, turquoise waters, and a more laid-back vibe than Waikiki, Kailua Beach is the perfect spot. Located on Oahu’s windward (east) coast, it’s consistently ranked one of the best beaches in Hawaii, and for good reason! With gentle waves, stunning views of the MokuluaIslands, and plenty of space to spread out, this is an ideal place to swim, kayak, or just relax under the sun. Why Visit Kailua Beach? Calm, Crystal-Clear Water: Perfect for swimming, bodyboarding, and stand-up paddleboarding. The gentle waves make it a great beach for all skill levels. Powder-Soft White Sand: Unlike some of Oahu’s rockier beaches, Kailua Beach has super fine, soft sand, making it great for walking and sunbathing. Great for Kayaking & Paddleboarding: You can rent a kayak and paddle out to the Mokulua Islands, which are just offshore. Less Crowded Than Lanikai: While still popular, it’s bigger and easier to access than Lanikai Beach, which often has parking challenges. Beautiful Sunrises: If you’re an early riser, sunrise at Kailua Beach is breathtaking.
Tips for Visiting
Best Time to Go: Morning for fewer crowds or midday for the best weather. Avoid late afternoons if it’s windy.
Parking: Plenty of free parking at Kailua Beach Park.
Facilities: Restrooms, showers, and picnic tables are available.
Rent a Kayak or Paddleboard: Kailua has rental shops nearby where you can get gear to explore offshore islands.
Watch for Jellyfish: Occasionally, Portuguese Man o’ War can show up, check the signs before swimming.
Skip the Weekend Crowds: It gets busy on Saturdays & Sundays, so go on a weekday for a more peaceful experience.
Thoughts from my Visit
In the Hawaiian language Kailua means "two seas" or "two currents". Kailua Beach ranks as the second most beautiful out of all the Oahu Beaches. It has long, golden stretches of powdery fine sand, and beautiful views Mokulua Islands, with the Koolau Mountains in the backdrop. There are three different parking lots, but as always, plan on going early to get a spot. I didn't take as many pictures as I would have liked, because I temporarily parked in one of the lifeguard spots, so I could jump out real quick and shoot these. I also recommend stopping in downtown Kailua, which is only five minutes away from the beach. It has a beach town feel with no hotel towers, big resorts or giant malls.
