Kamaole Beach

Kamaole Beach, often called Kam Beach by locals, actually refers to three beaches, Kamaole I, II, and III, all located in Kihei on Maui's sunny south shore. These beaches are family-friendly, easy to access, and great for swimming, snorkeling, and sunset spotting. With nearby parks, grassy picnic areas, and calm waves (most of the time), Kamaole Beaches are perfect for a relaxing beach day without going too far off the beaten path. Why Visit Kamaole Beach (I, II & III)? Kamaole I : The largest and flattest of the three, with soft sand and usually the calmest water. Great for swimming and paddleboarding. Kamaole II : A little smaller, but still awesome for sunbathing and swimming. There's a rocky outcropping on each end that makes for great snorkeling. Kamaole III : More rugged and dramatic, with bigger waves, a large grassy area, and a nice rocky point for photos. Great for watching the sunset or spotting turtles! Snorkeling & Sea Turtles: The rocky areas between the beaches are prime spots for snorkeling, and you'll often see sea turtles cruising the reef. Super Family-Friendly: With lifeguards, restrooms, showers, and easy parking, it's great for a low-stress beach day.

Tips for Visiting

  • Best Time to Go? Morning for the calmest water and easiest parking. Sunset for gorgeous views and photo ops.

  • Parking is Easy: There are parking lots and street parking near all three beaches, just get there early during weekends or holidays.

  • Bring Snorkel Gear: Especially for Kam II and Kam III, where reefs near the rocks often have turtles and tropical fish.

  • Facilities: All three beaches have restrooms, outdoor showers, picnic tables, and lifeguards.

  • Stay for Sunset: The beaches face west, so you'll get some of the best, mellow sunsets on the island.

  • Great for Picnics: Bring lunch or grab something from a nearby food truck or cafe, then enjoy it in the grassy picnic areas.

Thoughts from my Visit

Actually three beaches next to each other bear the name I, II and III. Kama'ole I is more popular with the locals. Since the lifeguard tower and bigger parking area and beach access is at the other end of the beach, it is usually not as crowded with visitors. Kamaole II is also a fairly wide sandy beach. Unfortunately after large storms, the sand can temporarily be removed by the ocean leaving rounded lava rock. Kamaole III is the most popular of the three. It is the best for boogie-boarding. It is the shortest and the least width of the three, but it has the most facilities and a gigantic grassy park area. It also has a playground, bathroom, and plenty of parking.
