Kualoa Regional Park
If you’re looking for stunning views, a peaceful beach, and a great picnic spot, Kualoa Regional Park is a must-visit. Located on Oahu’s windward side, this spacious park offers jaw-dropping views of Mokoli‘i (Chinaman’s Hat) and the Koʻolau Mountains. It’s not a major swimming beach, but the shallow waters and serene atmosphere make it perfect for relaxing, kayaking, or just enjoying the scenery. Why Visit Kualoa Regional Park? Unreal Views: The combination of turquoise water, green mountains, and the iconic Mokoli‘i island makes this one of the most photogenic spots on Oahu. Chill Beach Vibes: The beach here is calm and not crowded, making it a great place to unwind. The water is shallow, so it's better for wading than swimming. Kayaking to Mokoli‘i (Chinaman’s Hat): One of the best adventures here is renting a kayak and paddling out to Mokoli‘i Island, where you can even hike to the top for amazing views. Spacious Park with Plenty of Shade: There are tons of picnic tables, palm trees, and grassy areas, making this a perfect spot for a picnic or just chilling. Movie-Worthy Backdrop: If the landscape looks familiar, it’s because Kualoa Ranch (right next door) has been the filming location for Jurassic Park, Lost, and many more Hollywood movies.
Tips for Visiting
Best Time to Go: Morning for fewer crowds, or afternoon for golden hour views.
Swimming: The water is shallow with a sandy bottom, but not the best for real swimming due to seaweed and occasional jellyfish.
Parking: Free and easy, there’s a big lot near the beach.
Facilities: Restrooms, showers, and plenty of picnic tables available.
Bring a Kayak or Paddleboard: The paddle to Mokoli‘i takes about 30 minutes, and it’s an epic adventure! Check the Tide Before Kayaking: Best to go at low tide, when you can even walk part of the way to Mokoli‘i.
Thoughts from my Visit
A trip to Kualoa Regional Park may be the place if you're looking to just sit back and relax. It is located just off of Kamehameha Highway, but you can't hear the noise from the highway at the beach. Plenty of parking available. Kualoa means “long ancestral background”. In the olden times, chiefs brought their children here to learn about their heritage and traditions. There is a nice view of nearby Mokoli'i Island. From the shore, the island looks like a coolie's hat, which earned it the nickname “Chinaman's Hat.”
