Lanakai Beach
If you’re dreaming of a perfect white sand beach with turquoise waters, Lanikai Beach is the spot. Located on Oahu’s windward side, right next to Kailua Beach, this small but breathtaking stretch of sand is often ranked among the best beaches in the world. With soft powdery sand, calm waters, and epic views of the Mokulua Islands, it’s the ultimate place to relax, swim, and soak in the island vibes. Why Visit Lanikai Beach? Soft, White Sand: Unlike some other beaches on Oahu, Lanikai has super fine, powdery sand—perfect for barefoot walks and laying out in the sun. Crystal-Clear, Calm Waters: Thanks to the offshore reef, the waves here stay gentle and swimmable year-round. Kayak to the Mokulua Islands (The Mokes): Lanikai is the best launch point for a kayak trip to the twin Mokulua Islands, where you can explore hidden beaches and tide pools. Absolutely Insane Sunrises: Since Lanikai faces east, you’ll get one of the most stunning sunrises on the island, totally worth waking up early for! Super Instagrammable: The palm trees, clear blue water, and iconic Mokes in the background make this one of the most photographed beaches in Hawaii.
Tips for Visiting
Best Time to Go: Early morning for sunrise or weekdays to avoid crowds.
No Official Parking Lot: You’ll need to park in the residential streets near Lanikai (be respectful of locals & don’t block driveways!).
No Restrooms or Showers: Come prepared! The nearest facilities are at Kailua Beach Park.
Swimming: Yes! The calm waters make it one of the best swimming beaches on Oahu.
Bring a Kayak or Paddleboard: If you’re up for an adventure, paddling to the Mokulua Islands is a bucket-list experience!
Go Early or Late: Lanikai is small and can get crowded, especially on weekends and holidays.
Thoughts from my Visit
The word “Lani Kai” literally translates to “Heavenly Ocean”. It is not only described as "most beautiful" of all Oahu beaches, but Lanikai Beach has consistently ranked as one of the best beaches in the world. The sand is really nice and there seems to be plenty of room for everyone. Parking can be an issue here, as there is only street parking available.. As with any beaches here, plan on going early to get a descent spot. You can see the famous Mokulua islands off-shore. There is the Lanakai Pillbox Hike very close by, so you could make a nice day of it.
