Makapu'u Beach
If you’re looking for stunning scenery, powerful waves, and fewer crowds than Waikiki, Makapuʻu Beach is a must-visit. Located on Oahu’s southeastern coast, just past Makapuʻu Lookout, this beach offers golden sand, turquoise waters, and dramatic cliffs as a backdrop. It’s one of the best bodyboarding beaches on the island, but the waves and currents can be strong, making it better for experienced swimmers. Why Visit Makapuʻu Beach? Awesome for Bodyboarding: If you love big, powerful shore breaks, this is one of the best spots on Oahu for bodyboarding. Unreal Scenery: Nestled between black volcanic cliffs and the bright blue ocean, this beach looks straight out of a movie. Chance to See Turtles & Seals: Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) and the occasional Hawaiian monk seal sometimes visit the beach! Near Sea Life Park & Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail: You can combine a visit with a short hike up Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail or a stop at Sea Life Park nearby. Great for Sunrise: Since it’s on the east side of Oahu, this beach is one of the best spots to watch the sunrise.
Tips for Visiting
Best Time to Go: Early morning for sunrise or midday for bodyboarding.
Swimming: Be careful! The waves and currents here can be strong, especially in the winter months.
Parking: Free parking lot, but it can fill up on weekends.
Facilities: Restrooms, showers, and lifeguards on duty.
Great Spot After a Hike: If you’re hiking Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail, this is a perfect place to cool off afterward.
Watch for Shore Breaks: The waves break right at the shore, so if you’re new to bodyboarding, be extra cautious.
Thoughts from my Visit
Nice smaller beach equipped with bathroom facilities. The beach has strong waves breaking close to the shore. Its a great spot for body boarders. The sand is really nice and there seems to be plenty of room for everyone. The parking area seemed like there was ample parking. As with any beaches here, plan on going early to get parking. One end of the area is all lava with some tidal pools and the other end is a medium sized beach area. The beach lies below the Makapu'u Lighthouse, so you could do that hike and then cool off in the water.
