Po'olenalena Beach

Po'olenalena Beach, tucked between Wailea and Makena on Maui's south shore, is one of those hidden gems that doesn't get as much attention as the big-name beaches, but totally should. With its soft golden sand, gentle waves, and wide-open feel, this is the spot for a quiet beach day, romantic stroll, or even a low-key sunset ceremony. It's also a local favorite for snorkeling and bodyboarding, especially in the mornings when the water is calm. Why Visit Po'olenalena Beach? Uncrowded & Relaxing: Even on weekends, it never feels packed, making it perfect for travelers who want a peaceful beach without the resort crowds. Good Snorkeling: There are rocky points at both ends of the beach, and those are great for spotting reef fish and the occasional honu (sea turtle). Amazing Sunsets: Facing west, this beach is prime for sunset watching, with fewer people around to block your view or your camera shot. Popular for Weddings & Photoshoots: The soft light, dramatic lava rocks, and wide horizon make this a favorite for photographers and couples. Chill Waves: Most of the year, the water is calm enough for a swim or paddle, but it gets a little livelier with small waves for bodyboarding too.

Tips for Visiting

  • Best Time to Go? Morning for snorkeling, or late afternoon for an epic sunset.

  • How to Get There: Head south from Wailea on Makena Alanui Road, and look for a small dirt parking lot across from a large field, the beach access is easy to miss, so drive slow!

  • Parking: There's a small, free parking lot and sometimes overflow onto the roadside, get there early for easy access.

  • Facilities: There are no restrooms or showers, so plan accordingly.

  • Bring Your Own Shade & Snacks: There's little to no natural shade, and no food stands nearby, come prepared.

  • Respect the Vibe: This beach is quiet and local-friendly, so keep things chill and help preserve the peaceful atmosphere.

Thoughts from my Visit

Po'olenalena means "yellow head". It's also known as Paipu Beach. It is a nice, long sandy beach with spectacular sunset views. It is a favorite location for wedding ceremonies. During the week it is less crowded and mostly popular with local families. The parking lot is a nice size, but of course on weekends you'll often have a tough time finding a spot. Snorkeling is good around the rocky outcroppings at the south end of the beach. The sandy bottom is sloped gently for pleasant swimming and playing. There is a port-a-potty at the north parking lot and a shower at the south entry.
