Sandy Beach
If you love big waves, bodyboarding, or just watching crazy shore breaks, Sandy Beach is the place to be. Known for its powerful waves that crash right onto the shore, this beach on Oahu’s southeastern coast is a favorite among locals and experienced surfers. But be warned, this is NOT a swimming beach unless you’re highly skilled in the water. Even standing in the shallows can be dangerous if you’re not careful! Why Visit Sandy Beach? World-Famous Shore Break: The waves break hard and fast, making this one of the best bodyboarding and bodysurfing spots on Oahu. Epic Scenery: Backed by volcanic cliffs and bright blue water, the beach is a great spot for photos and relaxing on the sand. Great for Watching Locals Bodyboard & Bodysurf: If you’re not into bodyboarding yourself, just watching the pros take on the waves is an experience in itself. Less Touristy Than Waikiki: While locals love this spot, it doesn’t get overrun by tourists like some other Oahu beaches. Beautiful Sunrises: Since it’s on the east side, this is a prime sunrise spot if you’re an early riser.
Tips for Visiting
Best Time to Go: Morning for sunrise, or midday for bodyboarding action.
Swimming: Not recommended unless you’re very experienced, the shore break is strong, and rip currents are common.
Parking: Free parking lot, but it fills up quickly on weekends.
Facilities: Bathrooms, showers, and lifeguards on duty (for good reason!).
Stay Out If You’re Unsure: The waves look fun but are dangerous, don’t underestimate the power of the shore break!
Best for Watching, Not Wading: If you’re not bodyboarding, just sit back, enjoy the view, and watch the experts take on the waves.
Thoughts from my Visit
A really nice beach equipped with life guards and bathroom facilities with outdoor showers. The beach has strong waves breaking close to the shore. If your not paying attention they will knock you right off your feet. Swimming is frowned upon here, but its a great spot for body boarders. The sand is really nice and there seems to be plenty of room for everyone. The parking area seemed like there was ample parking. As with any beaches here, plan on going early to get parking. The day I went there was also a nice Shaved Ice, drinks, smoothies, etc. stand. I'm sure they are there often, I would think, especially in the summer.
