Secret Beach

If you’re looking for a hidden gem with crystal-clear water, dramatic lava rock cliffs, and an adventurous feel, Halona Cove (also called Halona Beach Cove or Secret Beach because you can't see it from the road) is the spot. Tucked away next to Halona Blowhole on Oahu’s southeastern coast, this small beach feels secluded and untouched, even though it’s just off the highway. It’s most famous as the filming location for the classic movie "From Here to Eternity", and it’s a great place for a quick dip, sunbathing, and taking in the stunning scenery. Why Visit Halona Cove? Famous Movie Location: This is where the iconic beach scene from From Here to Eternity (1953) was filmed, making it a must-see for movie lovers. Crystal-Clear Water: The cove is protected from big waves, so the water is often calm and perfect for a quick swim. Epic Lava Rock Cliffs: The surrounding black lava rock formations make this one of the most unique and photogenic beaches on Oahu. Right Next to Halona Blowhole: A few steps away, you can watch the powerful Halona Blowhole shoot water up to 30 feet in the air! Chance to See Sea Turtles: Sometimes Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) cruise through the cove, so keep an eye out!

Tips for Visiting

  • How to Get There: Park at Halona Blowhole Lookout and carefully hike down the rocky path to the cove (it’s steep but short).

  • Best Time to Go: Early morning for fewer crowds, or late afternoon for golden-hour lighting.

  • Swimming: Only when the water is calm! The waves can be unpredictable, and there are no lifeguards.

  • No Facilities: No restrooms, no showers, no food vendors, bring what you need.

  • Wear Good Shoes: The trail down is rocky and slippery, sandals aren’t ideal.

  • Respect the Area: This is a natural, sacred spot for locals, so keep it clean and be mindful of others.

Thoughts from my Visit

Halona Cove, is below the highway next to the Halona Blowhole viewpoint. It's a nice rest stop on your way to other adventures, and if your feeling like a dip, you can traverse on down the hill to the beach cove. The beach, also know as Secret Beach, got its name because you can't see it from the road. Scenes from the old movie "From Here to Eternity", and also “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “50 First Dates” were filmed there.
