Sunset Beach

If you’re looking for massive winter waves, world-class surfing, and one of the best sunset views on Oahu, Sunset Beach is the place to be. Located on the North Shore, this two-mile-long stretch of golden sand is famous for its huge waves in the winter and calm, swimmable waters in the summer. Whether you’re here to watch the pros surf, relax on the beach, or catch an epic Hawaiian sunset, this spot never disappoints! Why Visit Sunset Beach? Big Wave Surfing Mecca: From November to February, this beach is home to some of the biggest waves on the planet, attracting pro surfers from around the world. It’s also one of the stops on the Triple Crown of Surfing. Calm & Swimmable in Summer: In the summer months (May to September), the ocean is flat and crystal-clear, making it great for swimming, snorkeling, and stand-up paddleboarding. Absolutely Breathtaking Sunsets: True to its name, Sunset Beach is one of the best places on Oahu to watch the sun go down. Bring a blanket, sit back, and enjoy the golden-hour magic! Chance to See Turtles: Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) sometimes rest on the shore, and you might spot them swimming near the reef. Scenic North Shore Drive Stop: If you’re doing a road trip along the North Shore, this is an easy and must-see stop along the way.

Tips for Visiting

  • Best Time to Go: Winter for big waves & surf competitions, or summer for calm waters & swimming. Sunset hour is amazing year-round!

  • Parking: Free parking lot, but it fills up fast. Street parking is available, but be mindful of signs.

  • Facilities: Restrooms and showers are available near the parking area.

  • Watch Out for Strong Currents: In winter, the waves and rip currents can be dangerous for non-experienced swimmers. Stay onshore if in doubt.

  • Bring a Beach Chair or Blanket: If you’re staying for sunset, a beach setup makes the experience even better.

  • Great Spot for a Picnic: Pack food or grab some North Shore favorites like a garlic shrimp plate or an açaí bowl from nearby food trucks.

Thoughts from my Visit

A really nice beach. Parking on the road in front of it and a big parking lot across the street. Just be careful crossing. Cars are moving fast along on this road. Big bathroom facility also across the street. Lots of nice sand on a good stretch of beach. Seemed like lots of room for everyone. Beautiful scenery. I really liked this one.
