Three Tables Beach
If you’re looking for a great snorkeling spot with crystal-clear water, vibrant marine life, and fewer crowds than Sharks Cove, Three Tables Beach is a solid pick. Located on Oahu’s North Shore, just next to Sharks Cove, this small but beautiful beach gets its name from the three flat reef formations visible at low tide. In the summer months, the water here is calm and perfect for snorkeling, while in winter, it transforms into a big wave zone, making it unsafe for swimming but great for watching the ocean’s raw power. Why Visit Three Tables Beach? Excellent Snorkeling: In calm summer conditions, you’ll find tons of colorful fish, coral formations, and even Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) cruising around the reef. Good Swimming Spot (In Summer): The sandy entry and shallow reef make it a great alternative to Sharks Cove if you prefer a bit more space. Relaxed & Less Crowded: While Waimea Bay and Sharks Cove get packed, Three Tables is usually a bit quieter, making it a nice place to chill. Marine Life Galore: Expect to see parrotfish, butterflyfish, eels, sea urchins, and occasionally a monk seal hanging out on the shore. Amazing Sunsets: Like most North Shore beaches, Three Tables is a great sunset-watching spot, with golden colors reflecting off the water and lava rocks.
Tips for Visiting
Best Time to Go: Summer (May - September) for snorkeling and swimming. Winter (November - March) is unsafe for swimming but good for wave watching.
Snorkeling: Yes! Best in the morning when the water is calm and visibility is clear.
Swimming: Only when the ocean is calm, winter months bring dangerous waves and rip currents.
Parking: Small parking lot across the street (shared with Sharks Cove), plus some roadside parking. Arrive early!
Facilities: No lifeguards, but there are restrooms and showers across the street.
Wear Reef-Safe Sunscreen: Helps protect the delicate coral and marine life.
Be Careful on the Reef: Avoid stepping on coral or touching marine life while snorkeling.
Thoughts from my Visit
Three Tables Beach got its name from the three sections of flat reef that will appear during low tide. The snorkeling and diving conditions are good if the ocean is calm, usually between May and September. The water is about 15 feet deep and you will be able to see all kinds of colorful fish and underwater lava tubes, ledges and arches. Sometimes you will be able to see sea turtles here.
