Waimanalo Beach
If you’re looking for one of the most beautiful, uncrowded beaches on Oahu, Waimānalo Beach is a dream come true. Located on the windward (east) side of the island, this long stretch of powdery white sand and turquoise water is perfect for relaxing, taking a long beach walk, or enjoying a peaceful swim. Unlike Waikiki or Lanikai, it’s rarely crowded, making it an ideal spot if you want a true local beach experience. Why Visit Waimānalo Beach? Soft, Powdery White Sand: Easily one of the softest, finest sand beaches on Oahu, perfect for barefoot walks and laying out in the sun. Crystal-Clear, Calm Waters: The gentle shore break makes it great for wading and playing in the water, though waves can get stronger at times. Less Crowded & More Relaxing: While Lanikai and Kailua Beach are always packed, Waimānalo stays quiet, making it a peaceful escape. Chance to See Turtles: Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) sometimes pop up in the water or rest on the beach. Absolutely Breathtaking Views: The Koʻolau Mountains behind you and the turquoise ocean in front make this one of the most photogenic beaches on the island.
Tips for Visiting
Best Time to Go: Morning for peaceful vibes, or midday for the best sun & swimming conditions.
Swimming: Yes! Usually calm, but waves can get bigger in winter, always check conditions.
Parking: Plenty of free parking at Waimānalo Beach Park and nearby areas.
Facilities: Restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and shaded areas available.
Bring Your Own Food & Drinks: There aren’t many vendors around, so pack snacks or stop at a nearby shrimp truck or local eatery.
Avoid the Bellows Air Force Base Area: Part of Waimānalo Beach is within Bellows Beach, which is only open to the public on weekends.
Thoughts from my Visit
Very nice beach. I was pleasantly surprised. Sand was gorgeous and the water and waves looked fantastic. There were restrooms and outside showers there, which makes it so nice, to be able to rinse off after a day in the surf. Seemed like there was a decent amount of parking, and on the day I went, it really wasn't very crowded. I got there around 1:30pm.
