Judd and Nuuanu Trail

6 miles 1528ft elevation Out & Back Loop Trail Moderate

The Judd and Nuʻuanu Trail Loop is a moderate jungle hike on Oahu that offers a mix of lush rainforest, a bamboo forest, scenic lookouts, and a waterfall. This is a great trail for beginners, families, or those looking for a short, shaded hike away from the crowds. The Judd Trail begins near Nuʻuanu Pali Drive in Honolulu’s Nuʻuanu Valley. The trail is shaded and well-marked, making it a great option for a hot day. Early in the hike, you’ll encounter a bamboo forest and cross a small stream. Mid-Hike: Jackass Ginger Pool (Optional Stop for a Dip!) About 10 minutes into the hike, you’ll reach Jackass Ginger Pool, a small waterfall and swimming hole. Locals and hikers sometimes swim here, but watch for slippery rocks. Connecting to Nuʻuanu Trail After passing Jackass Ginger Pool, the trail climbs gradually and meets Nuʻuanu Trail. The trail becomes slightly steeper and muddier, but it remains shaded by large trees and ferns. Expect lush jungle views, vines, and occasional bird sounds. A clearing along the Nuʻuanu Trail provides a stunning overlook of Nuʻuanu Valley and the Koʻolau Mountains. On clear days, you can see the Pali Highway winding through the valley. Descent & Return: The loop connects back to Judd Trail, leading you back to the trailhead. The total loop takes about 1.5 to 2 hours at a relaxed pace.

Tips for Hiking

  • Best Time: Morning or Late Afternoon.

  • Early Morning: Cooler, fewer people, best for swimming.

  • Midday: Hot but shaded, possible afternoon rain.

  • Late Afternoon: Beautiful lighting, but mosquitos can be bad near the water.

  • Avoid hiking after heavy rain: The trail can become muddy and slippery, especially near Jackass Ginger Pool.

  • Small roadside parking along Nuʻuanu Pali Drive (arrive early to secure a spot!). Do not block driveways or park in no-parking zones.

  • Wear sturdy shoes: Trail can be muddy & slippery.

  • Bring bug spray: Mosquitos are common, especially near the water.

  • Pack a swimsuit & towel: If you want to take a dip in Jackass Ginger Pool. Watch for flash floods: Do not swim in the pool after heavy rain.

  • Stay on the trail: Some side paths can be confusing.

Thoughts from my Hike

The trail head is on Nu'uanu Road on the right side. Limited parking but seems to be enough available. My plan was to go around the Judd Trail Loop to the left, go up Nu'uanu Trail, and then come back around the back half of Judd Trail over to the waterfall. So I must have been lost in thought, because I went to the right and over to the waterfall. No worries. I headed around the back side and started up the Nu'uanu Trail and got about halfway. A torrential downpour hit me, so I tried to wait it out, but 20 minutes later and no let-up, I decided to head back down, and try again another day. The trail was marked pretty good with some switch backs.
