Makamaka'ole Falls Hike

2.0 miles 528ft elevation Out & Back Moderate

If you’re looking for a lesser-known waterfall hike in Maui, Makamaka‘ole Falls is a hidden gem worth exploring. Located along the Waihe‘e Ridge Trail, this two-tiered waterfall cascades down lush cliffs, offering a stunning reward for those willing to trek through Maui’s vibrant rainforest. It’s a moderate-level hike with some muddy and overgrown sections, but the scenic views and refreshing waterfall make it well worth the effort. Why Visit Makamaka‘ole Falls? Unlike some waterfalls in Maui that require a long drive, this one is accessible by hiking and offers an impressive double-drop cascade. Part of the Waihe‘e Ridge Trail: If you're up for a more challenging adventure, combine this with the Waihe‘e Ridge Trail, one of Maui’s best panoramic hikes. A Shorter Waterfall Option: If you don’t want to do the full ridge trail, there’s a shorter hike that takes you closer to the falls. Great for Photography: The lush green cliffs, jungle scenery, and dramatic waterfall drops make for stunning nature shots. Chance to See Native Birds & Wildlife: Keep an eye out for Hawaiian forest birds, tropical plants, and even small pools where you can cool off.

Tips for Hiking

  • Best Time to Visit? Early morning or after light rain for a stronger waterfall flow.

  • Avoid heavy rain days: The trail can get very slippery.

  • How to Get There: Park at the Waihe‘e Ridge Trailhead off Kahekili Highway (Hwy 340). The trail to see the falls begins near the 0.5-mile mark.

  • Trail Difficulty: Moderate. Expect some muddy and uneven terrain, especially if it’s recently rained.

  • Wear Proper Footwear: Hiking shoes or sturdy trail runners are best since the trail can be slippery and overgrown in some areas.

  • Bring Bug Spray & Water: Since it's in a humid rainforest area, expect mosquitoes and high humidity. Stay hydrated!

  • Respect the Environment – Stay on marked trails, avoid stepping on delicate plant life, and always pack out what you bring in.

Thoughts from my Hike

The Makamaka'ole Falls Trail, is also known as 13 Crossings, You will cross Makamaka'ole Stream 13 times and these crossings are often not very easy. The falls reside in the West Maui Forest Reserve in Wailuku, You will encounter a dense bamboo forest along the way as well as Guava trees and fruit throughout the hike. The trail is often very narrow in places so watch your footing.
