Makiki Valley Trail

3.2 miles 1036ft elevation Loop Trail Moderate

The Makiki Valley Loop Trail is a moderate jungle hike in Honolulu’s Makiki Valley, offering a lush rainforest experience, scenic ridge views, and stream crossings. This peaceful, shaded trail is perfect for those looking for a quiet nature escape without leaving the city. The hike begins at the Makiki Forest Recreation Area, near the Hawai‘i Nature Center. Follow the marked trailhead into the rainforest. Mid-Hike: The trail climbs gradually, passing through bamboo forests, guava trees, and ferns. Several ridge sections offer views of downtown Honolulu and the Koʻolau Mountains. Expect wooden steps, switchbacks, and occasional ropes in steeper areas. About halfway, the trail descends into Makiki Valley, where you’ll cross small streams. The area is shaded and lush, making it a cool, refreshing section of the hike. Descent & Return: The loop connects back to the starting point via the Kanealole and Maunalaha Trails. The total hike takes about 2 to 2.5 hours round trip, depending on pace.

Tips for Hiking

  • Best Time: Morning or Late Afternoon.

  • Early Morning: Cooler, fewer people.

  • Midday: More humid, but shaded in most areas.

  • Late Afternoon: Nice lighting, but avoid hiking close to dark.

  • Avoid hiking after heavy rain: The trail can become very muddy and slippery.

  • Wear good hiking shoes: Tree roots & muddy sections can be slippery.

  • Bring bug spray: Mosquitos are common in the valley.

  • Pack water: The trail is shaded but humid.

  • Use GPS or trail maps: Multiple trails intersect, stay on course.

  • Go early for a peaceful hike: Fewer people, cooler temperatures.

Thoughts from my Hike

This was a pretty good hike through the forest. No real views to speak of. If your just looking for exercise, then this is a pretty good loop, I suggest going clockwise where you have the choice, otherwise you will start off with a long butt-crunching incline.
