Manoa Falls Trail

1.7 miles 633ft elevation Out & Back Trail Moderate

The Mānoa Falls Trail is one of Oahu’s most popular and scenic waterfall hikes, featuring a beautiful 150-foot waterfall deep in Mānoa Valley’s lush rainforest. This family-friendly hike is well-maintained and great for beginners, photographers, and nature lovers. The hike begins at Lyon Arboretum/Mānoa Falls Trail parking lot. The first part of the trail is wide and well-maintained, passing through lush jungle scenery. Expect to see towering banyan trees, giant ferns, and bamboo groves along the way.

Mid-Hike: As the trail narrows, it becomes rocky and muddy, watch your step! You’ll pass small stream crossings and moss-covered boulders. You may spot Hawaiian birds, wild ginger, and colorful mushrooms. The 150-foot waterfall cascades into a rocky pool, surrounded by moss-covered cliffs and dense jungle. Swimming is prohibited to protect the watershed and due to bacteria in the water. A viewing area with wooden fencing lets you take in the beauty safely. Descent & Return: The return trip is easier, but the mud can make it slippery, so take your time. The entire hike takes about 1 to 1.5 hours round trip, depending on pace and stops.

Tips for Hiking

  • Best Time: Morning or Midday.

  • Early Morning: Fewer crowds, cooler temps.

  • Midday: Best lighting for photos, but busier.

  • Late Afternoon: Peaceful, but can get dark quickly in the valley.

  • Avoid hiking after heavy rain: Flash floods & falling rocks can be hazardous. Parking: Limited spots, arrive early on weekends.

  • Wear proper hiking shoes: Trail gets very muddy.

  • Bring bug spray: Mosquitos are everywhere in the valley.

  • Carry water: The hike is humid, and there are no refill stations.

  • Use sun protection: While shaded, the parking area and trail entrance are sunny.

  • Respect the area: Stay on the trail and do not enter the water. The pool at the base of the falls is off-limits due to leptospirosis concerns.

Thoughts from my Hike

Decent amount of parking available. Most times the falls won't be running strong, unless a decent rain storm happened recently. Trail can be wet and slippery in some areas. I took my time and stopped for pictures, waiting for people to be out of each shot. Although the falls were pretty weak, it was nice to hang out and see it. Take your time, enjoy the scenery and just enjoy the relatively calm hike. This is a single path all the way to the falls and you can't get lost along the way.
