Pali Twins hike

1.2 miles 800ft elevation Out & Back Trail Easy

The Pali Twins Hike is a short but challenging ridgeline adventure near the Pali Lookout, offering epic views of the windward coast and two distinctive rock formations known as the “twins.” This off-the-beaten-path hike features steep ascents, narrow ridges, and some rope-assisted sections, making it best suited for experienced hikers comfortable with exposure and scrambling. Can be very windy. The Pali area is known for strong gusts. The hike starts at the Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout, a popular tourist stop with panoramic views of Kaneohe and Kailua. Look for a small, unmarked trail entrance near the stone wall on the left side of the lookout. Mid-Hike: The trail quickly becomes steep, requiring handholds on trees, roots, and rocks. Several sections have ropes to assist with climbing, but be cautious of loose dirt. As you gain elevation, the views become more stunning, but the ridge narrows. The twin rock formations sit along the narrow ridge and are a great photo spot. From here, enjoy breathtaking views of the Koʻolau Mountains, windward Oahu, and Kaneohe Bay. Some hikers continue along the ridge, but it becomes even more technical and dangerous. Descent & Return: Descending is trickier due to loose dirt and steep drops, use caution and ropes. The entire hike takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours round trip, depending on pace.

Tips for Hiking

  • Best Time: Early Morning or Late Afternoon.

  • Early Morning: Cooler temps, fewer people.

  • Midday: Windier and hotter, but the best lighting.

  • Late Afternoon: Golden-hour views, but avoid finishing in the dark.

  • Avoid hiking after rain: The ridge becomes dangerously slippery.

  • Parking: Park at the Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout. Be mindful of car break-ins, this area has had past incidents.

  • Wear proper hiking shoes: Loose dirt makes it easy to slip.

  • Use gloves for rope sections: Helps with grip and safety.

  • Bring at least 1 liter of water: The ridge is exposed and dry.

  • Check the weather: Avoid high winds and rain.

  • Stay cautious near drop-offs: The ridge is narrow in places.

Thoughts from my Hike

You can make it a very short hike using the old Pali Highway. There is a big black gate blocking the entrance. If you don't enjoy food too much, you can squeeze by on the right side where it butts against the rocks. When you reach the "bridge" where there is a waterfall flowing under the road, look to the right and you’ll be able to see one of the twin falls if they are flowing. It only takes 5-10 minutes to reach them from the road on an overgrown path, but it is pretty easy to follow. Good views of Kaneohe from the road.
