Waimano Falls Hike
2.9 miles 810ft elevation Out & Back Trail Hard
The Waimano Falls Hike is a moderate jungle trek in Pearl City, leading to a beautiful waterfall with swimmable pools and rope swings. This fun and adventurous hike is popular among locals and great for those looking for a mix of hiking, water play, and scenic views. Steep and muddy in sections. Expect some rope-assisted descents. Waterfall may dry up in the summer, so sest after recent rain. The hike starts at the Manana Trailhead in Pacific Palisades, Pearl City. The first part of the trail is relatively flat, following a wide dirt path through lush vegetation. Expect to see wild guava trees, bamboo, and tropical plants along the way. Mid-Hike: After about 1 mile, the trail takes a steep drop known as "Cardiac Hill", requiring careful footing. Some sections have ropes to help with the descent, especially if it's muddy. The trail narrows as it gets closer to the waterfall basin. The falls consist of two tiers, with swimmable pools at the base. A rope swing is often set up, making this a fun spot to jump in and cool off. Descent & Return: The way back is more challenging, as you must climb back up Cardiac Hill. Expect the entire hike to take about 2.5 to 3.5 hours round trip, depending on stops.
Tips for Hiking
Best Time: After light rain, but not during storms.
Early Morning: Cooler temps, fewer people.
Midday: Best lighting for photos, but hotter.
Late Afternoon: Peaceful, but make sure you leave before dark.
Avoid hiking after heavy rain: The trail gets extremely muddy, and flash floods can be dangerous.
Parking: Street parking is available near Komo Mai Drive in Pacific Palisades. Be respectful of residents, do not block driveways or park illegally.
Wear waterproof hiking shoes: Mud and slippery terrain.
Use gloves for rope sections: Helps with grip on Cardiac Hill.
Bring bug spray: Mosquitos are common in the valley.
Pack a towel & extra socks: If you plan to swim, you’ll want dry gear for the hike back.
Download offline maps: Trail markings are not always clear.
Thoughts from my Hike
The falls are located in the center of Oahu near Pearl City. The trailhead is located at the end of Komo Mai Drive. You can park along the road, but don't park past the no parking signs at the end of the cul-de-sac. You start on the Manana Ridge Trail where you will walk along a shaded path that follows the ridge, with some periodic views of the Manana Valley and the Waimano Valley. After a ways, the trail heads downhill on a steep and muddy descent to the floor of Waimano Valley and to the lower and upper falls.
