Waimoku Falls Trail

3.8 miles 908ft elevation Out & Back Moderate

If you’re looking for the most epic waterfall hike on Maui, Waimoku Falls Trail is the one. Located in Haleakalā National Park, this 4-mile round-trip hike takes you through bamboo forests, past smaller waterfalls, and ends at the breathtaking 400-foot Waimoku Falls. This is one of the best hikes on the island, combining adventure, lush rainforest scenery, and an unforgettable waterfall experience. Why Hike the Waimoku Falls Trail? Waimoku Falls drops an incredible 400 feet down a sheer lava rock cliff, making it one of the most impressive waterfalls in Hawaii. Walk Through a Magical Bamboo Forest: The trail takes you through a dense bamboo grove, where the wind creates a peaceful, almost musical sound as it moves through the stalks. Part of the Pipiwai Trail: This hike follows the Pipiwai Trail, considered one of the best hikes in all of Hawaii for its lush scenery and variety of landscapes. See Makahiku Falls & Infinity Pool: About halfway through the hike, you’ll pass Makahiku Falls (200 feet tall) and an infinity pool at the top of a cliff, though swimming here is not allowed for safety reasons. Tons of Tropical Plants & Wildlife: The trail is full of massive banyan trees, wild ginger, tropical flowers, and native birds, making the entire hike feel like an adventure through paradise.

Tips for Hiking

  • Best Time to Go? Morning (before 10 AM) or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and crowds.

  • How to Get There: Located at the end of the Road to Hana, inside Haleakalā National Park (Kīpahulu District).

  • Entry Fee: $30 per vehicle (covers Haleakalā National Park for 3 days, including sunrise at the summit).

  • Trail Difficulty: Moderate. It’s mostly a gradual incline, but muddy and slippery after rain. The bamboo forest boardwalk makes some sections easier.

  • Wear Good Hiking Shoes: The trail can be muddy and rocky, so avoid flip-flops and wear proper hiking shoes or trail runners.

  • Bring Plenty of Water & Snacks: There are no food or drink options inside the park, so bring what you need.

  • Watch for Flash Floods: Do NOT go past the signed warning area near Waimoku Falls, as rockfalls and sudden flooding can be dangerous.

Thoughts from my Hike

Waimoku Falls is found at the end of the Pipiwai Trail, above Seven Sacred Pools on the Road to Hana. This hike also passes the Makahiku Falls along the way which are also beautiful. When you arrive at the falls, there is a sign which prohibits you to get closer to the base. I believe the worry is flash flooding on the stream that you have to cross to get to the base.
