Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail
4.7 miles 1,617ft elevation Out/Back Trail Moderate
The Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail is a challenging ridge hike that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Koʻolau Mountains, Honolulu, and the windward coast. Located in a gated community in East Honolulu, this less crowded alternative to more intense ridge hikes like Kuliʻouʻou Ridge or Olomana makes it an excellent choice for those seeking adventure without extreme exposure. Important Notes: Gated community access. Permit required from the security guard at the entrance. Steep sections near the summit. Some rope-assisted climbs required. The hike begins inside the Waialae Iki gated community. You’ll need to check in at the security gate for a free permit. The first mile follows a wide, dirt road, making for an easy, gradual start. You’ll pass through tall ironwood and strawberry guava trees, with occasional ocean views along the way. Mid-Hike: After about 1.5 miles, the trail narrows and becomes steeper, following the Koʻolau ridgeline. Expect wooden steps, switchbacks, and sections of overgrown ferns. Some ropes are provided to assist with steeper, muddy inclines. The summit offers stunning views of the windward side, including Kailua, Waimānalo, and Mokoliʻi (Chinaman’s Hat). On clear days, you can see all the way to Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, and even Molokaʻi in the distance. The final ridge section can be very windy, so use caution near drop-offs. Descent & Return: The way down can be slippery, especially after rain. Use the ropes for extra support. The full hike takes about 3 to 4 hours round trip, depending on pace.
Tips for Hiking
Best Time: Morning or Late Afternoon.
Early Morning: Cooler temps, fewer clouds at the summit.
Midday: Best for visibility, but can be hot and crowded.
Late Afternoon: Beautiful golden light, but be mindful of gate closing times.
Avoid hiking after heavy rain: The trail becomes extremely muddy, and the ridge can be dangerous.
Wear proper hiking shoes: Muddy and steep near the summit.
Use gloves for rope sections: Helpful for better grip.
Bring at least 2 liters of water: No shade on the ridge.
Check weather conditions: Avoid after heavy rain for safety.
Arrive early: Security only allows a limited number of hikers per day.
Parking: Limited parking inside the Waialae Iki gated community. Check in at the security gate at Waialae Iki 5 and they will issue a free hiking permit. Gates open at 7 AM and close around 6 PM so plan accordingly.
Thoughts from my Hike
This trail was challenging in parts, but I really enjoyed it. This was not an easy hike in some parts. It was one of my first hikes on the island and I just had regular sneakers on and it was muddy in several places, making it very slippery, especially going back down. On this hike, I met a couple from overseas, and she had on removable shoe spikes. Ahhhh, the light bulb came on in my head and I immediately ordered a pair from Amazon. A few ropes in places that really came in handy, especially on the return trip. Some steps, either man-made or cut into the slope really helped out. It ends at a nice open spot with a bench, overlooking some beautiful views. I get such an amazing feeling when I arrive at my destination. Such a sense of accomplishment. On the way back, I was definitely trying not to slide down the hill in several spots. Had to turn around backwards several times to go down certain sections, mostly on the top third of the trail. It was almost more difficult going down then it was up. As with all the hikes, bring plenty of water, and a nice hand towel comes in handy to wipe your sweat. Long hike, but worth it for the views and of course, the personal challenge!
